In the previous post we outlined our hopes and plans regarding our balcony and also explained how we DIY its furniture. In this post we will concentrate more on how we reached the balcony’s final look.
Since in Finland everyone walks without shoes at home and the balcony’s floor is made out of concrete, we decided to cover it with something. Of course, any artificial material didn’t come into question, because we wanted our balcony to have warm a natural feeling. We found these rush rugs that are thick enough to protect from the cold concrete, feel very nice even when walking barefoot and match splendidly with the green coming from our plants.

Our balcony has such a nice view that, from the beginning, our goal was to exalt it. We dreamed of laying down on our benches, admiring the ever-changing sky with its clouds in front and the forest on the side. As the balcony is glass protected and we wanted to create some privacy, we made some curtains to cover one side of the lower part of the glass. We used a basic Ikea curtain, 100% cotton and white, cut it into three and just sewed the edges so that they wouldn’t start to ravel. We pinned them with these kind of clips:

To make the benches more comfortable, we thought of covering them with mattresses. We found in a family storage a latex one, so we cut it in a way that would cover the benches and wrapped it on rag rugs. We chose rag rugs for their endurance and ragged look, to contrast the minimalist style given by the table and the chalkboard.

The icing on the cake of our balcony are no doubt these autumny Pentik pillows. They belong to the new autumn collections of this Finnish design brand, called Valmu and Angervo. I love their colors and modern style, that bring some life to gloomy autumn days.

Summer in Finland is basically already over and soon what we call “kaamos”, that is the winter darkness, will be here. A way we are going to fight the so common autumn depression is to slow living.

In our balcony lightened by candles, under a blanket, with a cup of tea or hot chocolate, reading books. From there we can follow what happens on the other side of the glass. We can admire the sudden changes of nature during this colorful and at the same time gloomy season, with leaves changing colors and eventually falling, leaving the trees bare, the squirrels collecting acorns to survive the winter and the first snowfalls approaching.
