In collaboration with Supermood
Finnish beauty brand Supermood approaches the cosmetic and skincare world from a totally different angle. In fact, not only they use natural products, but they believe that taking care of one-self’s beauty does not consist in covering, but should start from taking care of one’s body in its every aspect: from how we eat to how we sleep. That’s why Supermood could be defined as an holistic experience.
Supermood uses only natural products, preferring the ones that can be found wild in the Finnish territory, such as sea-buckthorn, chaga mushroom and birch sap. And this is also the reason why Supermood does not have a eco-certificate: the ingredients that grow spontaneous in nature cannot be cataloged and therefore are unable to get the certificate. That’s how the law works, even though to me it sounds a little bit funny.
We had the privilege to collaborate with this really valid brand and to test some of their products. Today we’ll start talking about one their line of products, Youth Glo, that includes three products: Luxury peel, a peeling cream with natural AHA acids and fruit extracts, Babyface mask, a mask with vitamin C and ginkgo biloba and Radiance capsules, capsules with collagen and glutathione.
Before we start I have to give you a warning: chemistry is something I’ve always liked. This passion hasn’t grown weaker now that I don’t have to study it anymore, on the contrary. So this was a perfect “excuse” to brush up some chemistry, that turned out to be a “trap”; once I would study an ingredient, I would want to know every little detail: where does it come from? What kind of results it brings? How does it behave? What kind of structure does it have? So that’s how I lost a looooot of time, but anyways, I’m quite satisfied because I now have a solid general view and that allows me to have a say in this. There’s actually a lot to say, I’ll try to keep it simple, understandable, but at the same time I will give you some details because I want you to grasp well how these products act on and in your skin.
Another thing that really impressed me in a positive way is that, when I read Supermood INCI lists, I understand them! The majority of the ingredients are organic or natural, only a small percentage are synthetics.
Here is an example. This is the INCI list of the Luxury peel, that I’ll soon talk about:
Meaning of the symbols
♥︎ Organic ingredient
★ Natural ingredient
✤ Synthetics ingredient
Aqua (Water) ✤, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Seabuckthorn) Fruit Juice ♥︎, Centaurea Cyanus (Cornflower) Flower Water ♥︎, Xanthan Gum ✤, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract ♥︎, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Fruit Extract ♥︎, Vigna Aconitifolia Seed Extract ✤, Maltodextrin ✤, Mentha Viridis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil ♥︎, D-Limonene ♥︎, Caprylyl/Capryl Wheat Bran/Straw Glycosides ✤, Fusel Wheat Bran/Polyglyceryl-5 Oleate ✤, Sodium Cocoyl Glutamate ✤, Glyceryl Caprylate ✤, Glycerin ✤, Calendula Officinalis (Marigold) Flower Extract ♥︎, Lactic acid ✤, Citric Acid ✤, Sodium Benzoate ♦, Potassium Sorbate ♦
This peel mask contain AHA acids, that are alpha hydroxy acids. These acids can be divided in: glycolic (found for example in melons), lactic, tartaric (for example in grapes), malic (in apples) and citric (in citruses).
AHA acids have exfoliant and antioxidant properties. In high concentration, they can get inside the skin, precisely in the stratum corneum (the most external one), and they separate keratinocytes (the cells which are alive) from the corneocytes (the cells which are dead). This is why these acids are perfect to renovate the skin and remove dead cells. Because of this process, the skin is stimulated to renovate itself and, therefore, will look healthier and fresher.
Do you have a sensitive skin? This mask is perfect for you too! Even though the concentration of the acids is high, Supermood succeeded in finding the balance that brings the effectiveness of this peel to its best, being perfect for every skin type.
In this peel there many different kind of fruit and flowers: sea-buckthorn, apple, grpefruit, cornflower and marigold.
Tip: because of the effectiveness of this peel, it will be enough to use it only once a week.
Instructions: the first application will last only one minute, so to test how your skin will react with it. Do not worry: you’ll be red and that’s normal. It means the acids are acting in your skin. After half an hour you’ll be back to normal. If the first application went well, the following ones can last from 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse with water.
Vitamin C is an
important essential element in our nutrition, which implies that it has to bring benefits to our skin also! In fact, the benefits are a lot, I’ll list you some of them:
- It helps the body to produce collagen and so to have a firmer and more elastic skin
- It reduces inflammations and irritations
- It is a strong antioxidant
- It helps to renew the skin
Let’s now talk about ginkgo biloba, that has been so much used lately, but that I haven’t really considered before nor wondered why is it so commonly used in cosmetics.
Well, first of all ginkgo biloba is a plant originally from China. Its foliage has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help to fight acne, rosacea, eczema and the signs of the time. Also, this plant is a natural antibacterial. All these reasons make clear why this mask is perfect to use after the Luxury peel: after eliminating all the dead cells, the skin will be more exposed and the Babyface mask will help to keep bacteria away.
Some of the key ingredients of this mask are sea-buckthorn, rosehip seed oil, sweet almond oil, ginkgo biloba leaf extract, elder flowers and spearmint leaf oil.
If I would have to define this mask with one word I would use fresh, because this is the lasting feeling even after the removal of the mask, as well as a super velvety and nourished skin!
Instructions: Apply generously onto face, avoiding eye area. Leave for 10-20 minutes (do not wait for it do dry, because it will not do that!) and rinse off with water.
Let’s still spend some words for the radiance capsules. After one jar of those capsules, I can honestly say I can see the difference if I compare my skin how it was before and how it looks now.
The main ingredients that are used to make these capsules are natural collagen and glutathione. Fish collagen naturally moisturizes and tones up the skin, whereas the glutathione is maybe the most important antioxidant that our body can produce. I give you a practical example: thanks to the glutathione, the red cells can last longer because they wouldn’t oxidize so easily. Alas, as we age, the body production of glutathione diminishes and that’s why it would be important to reintegrated it somehow. These capsules also contain a good dose of Vitamin C, that stimulates the body to naturally produce collagen.
I could really experience the benefits of taking these capsules, especially during this time of the year. Usually, my skin tends to be oily, but here in Finland , mainly because of the cold that kinda force you to spend time inside (where the air is quite dry), my skin is very dry and chaps very much. Well, not this winter! Of course, my skin is still drier that how it was in Italy or how it would be in summertime, but is way better than if I wouldn’t have taken the capsules! I find it really firm, elastic and healthy, and I cannot be anything else but satisfied! This said, do not expect to eat junk food and have a baby skin! Radiance capsules are just a supplement, which means that they work along with a healthy lifestyle and diet. The recommended dose is 2 capsules per day, so one jar will last little bit more than a month.
